Sodium sulfite (chemical formula: Na₂SO₃) is an important inorganic chemical raw material. Under normal conditions, it exists as white crystalline powder or hexagonal prismatic crystals, with no obvious odor. It is highly soluble in water, and its aqueous solution is weakly alkaline; it is slightly soluble in ethanol, insoluble in liquid chlorine and ammonia. It is easily oxidized to sodium sulfate in air and decomposes at high temperatures to produce sulfur dioxide gas.

Applications
